I was listening to the following podcast on Barstool this past weekend… the hosts discussed the “Movies Which Make You Cry”. I have several opinions on this matter, but will save that for another post.
Most of the discussion did not surprise me, until one of the hosts drafted (the 1993) “Homeward Bound”…. specifically… the moment when Shadow is stuck in a ditch.
OK.
Based on this exchange, and also seeing (84 minutes) it’s a short ass movie…. I decided to watch this film for the first time ever, and can report the following…
Truthfully, I’m not going to actually review this movie… 90% of my subscribers are Millennials or Gen Xers… most of whom have kids with a D+ subscription. You all know this FINE PICTURE, probably know the original 1961 Canadian Disney version, and have seen the “Lost in San Francisco” sequel countless times. Saying "SPOILER ALERT” is falling upon death ears for this readership.
I’ll get to the point.
Specifically, the scene where Shadow falls into the muddy ditch. Shadow is a wise dog, obviously not very athletic (I can relate). Shadow tries on MULTIPLE occasions to get up the ditch. It is CLEARLY not happening. He’s failing miserably. Shadow is old, he apparently has a fractured leg… and let’s be frank (it’s an adult audience here)… he’s ready to die. Shadow… God bless him… he’s had a good run.
Enter Chance, the young pup voiced by Michael J. Fox, who scoots down the ditch in an attempt to inspire Shadow, giving him a pep talk and whatever. Each dog is muddy, tired, whatever. They have this meet cute, and we cut back to their owners happy back at home, with the two dogs and cat running back home like nothing happened.
LISTEN PEOPLE… I KNOW it’s a kids Disney movie, I ENJOY happy endings, I especially love a GOOD CRY.
That said, can someone explain to me how the (yes) HELL did Shadow get out of that ditch?
That’s the question. Have a good night!!!
